SHORT CITY GUIDE

Çanakkale: Troy, the historic peninsula and the Aegean coast

Çanakkale reaches beyond the battlefields and Troy. Ceramics, independent art in reused depots, courtyard hans and archaeology books support a slower cultural day in town.

Plan by area

The city centre, Kilitbahir, Troy and Küçükkuyu/Ayvacık are separate areas. Treat Bozcaada or Gökçeada as an island day with its own transport; avoid combining two islands and the mainland in one day.

Places to explore

How long are you staying?

Arrange the stops around your interests and pace. Places in the same area are grouped; transport times and opening schedules are not calculated.

Museums, books and independent art

Begin with the City Museum, then choose ceramics or MAHAL if its programme fits. Korfmann is a research library, so check access separately from exhibition venues.

Making in Küçükkuyu

Adatepe village and its namesake olive-oil museum are in different locations. The museum is in a Küçükkuyu soap factory; choose village and coastal stops within a separate southern outing.

Waterfront and maritime history

Combine the central waterfront stop with an interest in maritime history.

A separate area plan for Troy

Consider the ruins and museum in one area and keep the peninsula and islands for separate days.

Central Çanakkale

Çanakkale kordonundaki Truva Atı

See the film’s horse as part of a city waterfront visit.

Çanakkale Deniz Müzesi / Çimenlik Kalesi

Explore maritime history alongside the castle setting.

Çanakkale Kent Müzesi ve Arşivi

Exhibitions in a former hotel tell the city through residents’ memories, photographs and everyday life. A return to urban stories after battlefield-focused visits.

Visit notes

An introduction that looks beyond the city’s battlefield and Troy narratives.

Pair it with Fetvane Sokak and the central bazaar quarter.

Draft visit duration: 60 min. An editorial estimate, excluding transfers and queues.

Yalı Hanı

The courtyard between Fetvane Sokak and Yalı Caddesi combines coffee with local cultural life. Inward-facing timber façades reveal a building that is easy to miss from the street.

Visit notes

A courtyard-architecture stop near the City Museum quarter.

Do not assume workshops or events are continuously available; courtyard use depends on the business.

Draft visit duration: 45 min. An editorial estimate, excluding transfers and queues.

Aynalı Çarşı

The red-stone entrance and multilingual inscription give this small bazaar a tangible historical focus beyond souvenir shopping.

Visit notes

The entrance and inscription reward a closer look beyond the famous song.

Treat it as a short city-centre stop; no shopping is required.

Draft visit duration: 30 min. An editorial estimate, excluding transfers and queues.

Plan a Tevfikiye excursion to explore the layers of the ancient settlement.

Ayvacık / Yeşilyurt

Yeşilyurt Köyü

Consider an unhurried Ayvacık excursion focused on village architecture.

Central Bozcaada

Bozcaada merkez

Build a separate plan with a ferry crossing to explore the island settlement.

Bozcaada Kalesi

The harbour-facing fortress reveals the island’s relationship with the sea through its walls and layout. It is a specific architectural visit rather than another name for the town centre.

Visit notes

Adds defensive architecture to an island day.

Check island transport and current fortress interior access separately.

Draft visit duration: 60 min. An editorial estimate, excluding transfers and queues.

Bozcaada / Polente

Polente Feneri çevresi

Allow for travel within the island before setting aside time for the coastal landscape.

Bozcaada / Ayazma

Ayazma kıyısı / Bozcaada

Treat this as a separate part of exploring Bozcaada’s coastline.

Gökçeada

Gökçeada / Uğurlu

Gökçeada Gizli Liman

Plan this coastal excursion near Uğurlu together with travel within the island.

Central Gelibolu

Cevatpaşa / Ceramics Museum

Çanakkale Seramik Müzesi

A former military bathhouse brings historical Çanakkale ceramics into dialogue with contemporary ceramic work. The reused building is part of the visit.

Visit notes

A material-led way into the craft associated with the city.

Workshops and temporary exhibitions depend on the announced programme.

Draft visit duration: 60 min. An editorial estimate, excluding transfers and queues.

Fevzipaşa / Sarıçay area

MAHAL

A former acorn depot beside Sarıçay is used for independent art and exhibitions. Its industrial scale and contemporary programme reveal another side of the city.

Visit notes

Adds independent contemporary art to a conventional museum itinerary.

Arrange a visit around the current programme; an exhibition or event is not assumed for every date.

Draft visit duration: 60 min. An editorial estimate, excluding transfers and queues.

Manfred Osman Korfmann Kütüphanesi

The scholarly memory of the Troy excavations lives in an archaeology library housed in a former tobacco depot. It offers a different encounter with Troy from the excavation site itself.

Visit notes

Highlights the research and books behind archaeological discoveries.

This is a research library; check current visitor and exhibition arrangements with the foundation.

Draft visit duration: 45 min. An editorial estimate, excluding transfers and queues.

Central Küçükkuyu

Adatepe Zeytinyağı Müzesi

An old soap factory in Küçükkuyu presents olive harvesting and oil-making tools. Despite the name, it is a separate museum in the town, not inside Adatepe village.

Visit notes

Explores food through the techniques that produce it.

Check tasting, food and group arrangements separately from museum admission.

Draft visit duration: 60 min. An editorial estimate, excluding transfers and queues.

Eceabat / Kilitbahir

Kilitbahir Kale Müzesi

On the European shore, this is a separate fortress from Çimenlik. Its massing and position over the strait connect the museum narrative to the building itself.

Visit notes

A different shore and fortress plan for understanding the strait’s defences.

Keep it for an Eceabat/Kilitbahir day; it is not part of the city-centre walking area.

Draft visit duration: 90 min. An editorial estimate, excluding transfers and queues.

Gökçeada / Zeytinliköy

Zeytinliköy

Protected village fabric, stone houses and a dibek-coffee tradition introduce Gökçeada’s settlement culture. A slower street visit rather than another coastal stop.

Visit notes

Explores island life beyond beaches and viewpoints.

Homes and places of worship belong to everyday village life; interior access is not assumed.

Draft visit duration: 90 min. An editorial estimate, excluding transfers and queues.

Make it your own

Edit these stops around your dates and interests, remove places and share the plan. Times, prices, events and ticket availability are not verified.
